An exciting developmental opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dynamic senior nurse with extensive experience to join the team of Patient Flow Matrons based in Clinical Operations at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a senior nurse for patient flow and site management.

The post holder will be a key member for the Clinical Operations team, to lead and coordinate capacity which supports effective clinical flow for both elective and emergency pathways whilst maintaining patient safety and providing visible senior clinical leadership out of hours on all matters relating to the management of the Hospital sites in the role of Duty Matron.

The successful applicant will be a professional clinical role model who inspires confidence, demonstrates excellent communication, interpersonal, organization, prioritization, decision making and problem-solving skills with the confidence and ability to escalate issues outside of the role of responsibilities.

You will demonstrate attention to detail and have the ability to collate complex information from multi-factorial sources, analyse the bed capacity situation using information technology, pre-empting planned and non -planned admissions and ensuring there are consistent, proactive systems and processes for managing safe patient flow across all of the Trust sites.

Main duties of the job

Ensure proactive systems and processes for managing patient flow across all of the Trust sites.

Work collaboratively as a cohesive team member to ensure effective management and leadership of the Patient Flow Sister Team and Discharge Lounge teams providing professional advice and leadership to the Patient Transport service. This is a senior leadership role and is focussed on the quality of patient experience through delivery of high quality, safe and effective care and the post holder will demonstrate the Trust PROUD values and behaviours.

Responsible for leading safe, resilient and consistent operational site management and facilitate safe and effective discharge in line with the Trust policies and procedures.

Manage bed capacity and demand through the ED department supporting timely assessment, treatment and transfer.

Work as part of a rotational team of Patient Flow matrons managing patient flow and fulfil the role of the Duty Matron role out of hours working across both the NGH and Central campuses.

Provide a visible presence supporting and liaising with the key assessment areas to facilitate patient flow and improve flow through to the speciality base wards and improve the utilisation of the Patient Discharge Lounge.

The Patient Flow team is a corporate nursing team based in Clinical Operations at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust (STHFT). STHFT is one of the UK's largest, busiest and successful NHS foundation Trusts and provides a comprehensive range of NHS and community services to Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Mid Yorkshire and North Derbyshire but also specialist services to all parts of the UK. As well as being a home to one of three Major Trauma Centers for the Yorkshire Humber region STHFT provides a range of specialist medical and surgical services including orthopaedics, renal, heart and lung services and a Spinal Injuries unit.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for the maximum period of 9 months. Where there is potential, the secondment/fixed term contract may finish early, or in the first instance, the secondment/fixed term contract may be extended due to the internal/external secondment of the substantive post holder. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts and secondments in relation to the substantive post holder.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

First level Registered General Nurse (with valid NMC registration). Masters in a Health related subject or currently working towards. Recognised leadership/management qualification. To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998. Commitment and evidence of ongoing professional development.

Experience

Essential criteria

Extensive post registration experience as a senior nurse including experience managing wards/services. Experience of managing high quality patient centred acute services. Experience of working in a senior nursing leadership role, managing staff and HR issues (Complaints/Investigations) Experience of managing governance systems. Proven change management experience and implementing strategic change.

Desirable criteria

Experience of managing a multi-disciplinary workforce. Experience of managing complex projects/programmes.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

Comprehensive understanding of patient flow in a busy acute Trust Ability to work under pressure and meet competing deadlines. Ability to contribute effectively to the organisational strategic vision. IT skills including DATIX and knowledge of Microsoft software packages.

Desirable criteria

Clinical skills including: venepuncture, Cannulation, IV drug administration, Verification of death Experience of conducting audit and research

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria

Highly motivated and passionate about patient flow and the delivery of patient centred care. A confident and competent decision maker with the ability to work both as part of a wider MDT team and autonomously. Assertive and confident with evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills.
