Job Description

This role as a Machine Learning Research Associate is available as part of the Future Talent Graduate Scheme.

Background
The primary purpose of this role is to support AI specialist staff with data analysis and technical research. The successful candidate will assist in collecting and analysing data, applying machine learning (ML) techniques to real-world problems, and contributing to the dissemination of findings to relevant stakeholders, where appropriate.

Additionally, the role involves supporting the development of innovative AI applications in areas such as healthcare (e.g., disease diagnosis) and cybersecurity (e.g., threat detection). Full training and guidance will be provided as needed.

Key Responsibilities
You will support AI-focused research and development by conducting literature and database searches, assisting with data collection, cleaning, and preparation, and applying machine learning techniques to meet project goals. Your work will involve generating insights from data, contributing to technical reports and presentations, and helping to communicate findings to both academic and industry stakeholders. You will also assist in developing and refining AI models, using initiative and problem-solving skills to adapt methods in response to evolving research needs.

Key Tasks

Research and Analysis Tasks

  • Conduct literature and database searches using standard research methods.
  • Assist in the collection, cleaning, and preparation of datasets.
  • Generate data insights and write data analysis reports.
  • Apply appropriate ML techniques to support research aims.
  • Write up findings and prepare presentations for internal and external stakeholders (industrial and academic format).

Innovation and Problem-Solving

  • Use initiative and judgment to develop or adapt ML models in response to research needs.
  • Contribute to solving research challenges and meeting project objectives and deadlines.

Dates: Monday 11 August - Friday 31 October 2025
Hours: 35 hours per week full time, except for Bank Holiday Monday (25 August 2025)
Working pattern: Monday to Friday. Working hours are 8:45am-4:30pm or 9:00am-4:45pm with an unpaid 45-minute lunch break
Location: The Dalton Building

Person Specification

This role is only open to those who graduated from a Manchester Met undergraduate course in June 2024 and are not currently studying, nor have previously studied, on a postgraduate course.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Essential:

  • A 2024 Manchester Met undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ability to conduct research by setting up, executing, and recording experiments or data analysis tasks.
  • Proficiency in Python and relevant ML/data science libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, matplotlib, pandas) and familiarity with platforms such as Google Colab or Jupyter Notebooks.
  • Sound knowledge of machine learning and AI concepts, with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Experience in collecting and handling data for research or project purposes.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage time independently, while also working effectively as part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Creativity and initiative in problem-solving and developing technical research approaches.
  • Familiarity with publishing or presenting research findings.
  • Interest in the application of AI in healthcare or cybersecurity domains.
