National Grid is hiring a Lead Data Scientist on a permanent basis. The location for this role can be based in Warwick - We offer a hybrid working model.


About The Role

National Grid is seeking a Lead Data Scientist who is passionate about leveraging advanced analytics to connect people to energy and enhance the sustainability of the energy system. In this role, you will collaborate with a diverse team of data scientists and machine learning engineers to tackle challenges across transmission, distribution, and interconnectors. You will convert data into actionable insights, addressing complex problems that significantly impact the lives of millions.


As a member of the National Grid Data Science team, you will work cross-functionally, mining both large and small datasets and applying a range of analytical techniques-from basic to advanced-to solve business challenges. Example projects the team has undertaken include root cause classification of transmission asset defects and data-driven asset management for interconnector assets.

What You'll Do

  • Lead major projects from conception to completion, collaborating with multiple teams and stakeholders to understand and address their analytical needs.
  • Identify, extract, and integrate datasets of varying sizes, from spreadsheets to big data; prepare and clean data for advanced analyses.
  • Utilize sophisticated analytics, machine learning, and statistical methods for predictive and prescriptive modeling, forecasting, and simulations.
  • Develop structured, documented, and version-controlled code, collaborating with Machine Learning Engineers to deploy models effectively.
  • Mentor and support junior Data Scientists in their professional development.
  • Contribute to the strategic vision for shaping the future of the Data Science team.

About You

  • Strong experience and skills in Python
  • Solid understanding of SQL
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies is preferred (Azure)
  • Proficient in machine learning tools and techniques
  • Proven experience in leading projects
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with business stakeholders
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into business language
  • Intellectually curious and eager to learn
  • Collaborative team player who thrives in a team environment

What You'll Get

A competitive salary between £65,000 - £80,000 - dependent on capability


As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
