Undergraduate Industrial Placement Student, Machine Learning and Cheminformatics

Location: Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire

Our site in Hoddesdon hosts synthetic chemists dedicated to discovering efficient methods for synthesizing novel compounds that have the potential to become future medicines. This involves the design, route development, and large-scale synthesis (multi-kilogram) of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). To support this, chemists leverage data science and machine learning tools to improve process understanding.

We are currently seeking an undergraduate student to join our team for a 12-month Machine Learning and Cheminformatics Industrial Placement. This placement provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience applying modern data science, cheminformatics, and machine learning techniques to process chemistry. 

You will expand your software development skills and gain exposure to the application of machine learning and cheminformatics to tackling challenging problems in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Utilizing your knowledge and problem-solving abilities, you will contribute to the development and deployment of predictive tools and workflows which enhance capabilities of lab chemists.

Requirements:

Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Chemistry with a significant computational or cheminformatics component, or in Computer Sciences or a related field with an interest in applications to chemistry Predicted 1st or 2:1 degree classification (or equivalent) Strong teamwork skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Good problem-solving abilities Attention to detail Conscientiousness Well-organized and confident in working independently Experienced programming in python and familiar with chemistry software packages (e.g. RDKit) Knowledge of machine learning techniques and familiar with common software packages (e.g. scikit-learn, pytorch)
