THE ROLE

We're looking for a mid-level data scientist to join our growing data team at Stonehaven. You'll bring around 3+ years of hands-on experience and be comfortable working across the full data lifecycle-from shaping questions and wrangling data, to building and validating models, to communicating clear, actionable insight. While the focus is data science, the role will also include elements of data engineering and analysis.

You'll help design and deliver statistical and machine-learning approaches that power our polling, policy and public-opinion work, and translate complex findings into crisp narratives that influence strategy and decision-making. You will also help the firm apply LLMs and agentic workflows to improve internal tools, automate processes, and enhance client delivery.

You will be responsible for :

  • Owning end-to-end data science projects: framing problems, sourcing/engineering data, training/validating models, and communicating results and limitations
  • Developing and maintaining statistical and predictive models (forecasting, classification/segmentation; causal/experimental methods where appropriate)
  • Designing, evaluating and deploying LLM applications and lightweight agents (e.g. RAG, tool-using agents, workflow automation) to scale insight and operational efficiency
  • Building clear, engaging visualisations and dashboards for internal and client use
  • Working with survey/polling data to derive robust, defensible insights (weighting, sampling, uncertainty)
  • Contributing to light data engineering: pipelines/ETL, data quality checks, documentation and reproducibility
  • Collaborating with colleagues across strategy, policy and communications to ensure data insight is central to our work
  • Improving internal tools and processes (version control, testing, code review, model monitoring) and supporting/mentoring junior colleagues where helpful

The Ideal Candidate

  • ~3+ years in a data science/analytics role applying models to real-world problems
  • Strong Python for analysis and modelling (pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn; statsmodels/PyMC a plus)
  • SQL and practical experience cleaning, transforming and joining data at scale
  • Experience creating visualisations or dashboards (Power BI, Tableau, Plotly, etc.)
  • Sound statistical foundations (sampling, inference, uncertainty, experiment/A-B test design, evaluation)
  • Hands-on with LLMs and agents (prompting/evaluation, RAG, vector search, orchestration frameworks; awareness of governance and data security considerations)
  • Familiarity with survey/polling data and weighting methods - exposure to MRP Modelling a big plus.
  • Basic data engineering practices (ETL/pipelines with tools like Airflow/dbt or equivalents) and software craftsmanship (Git, code review, unit tests)
  • Exposure to cloud environments (AWS/GCP/Azure) and notebooks; Docker/CI/CD is a plus
  • Ability to translate technical results into clear language and compelling stories for non-technical audiences

Person Profile

  • An effective communicator with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team
  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, with good prioritisation and follow-through
  • Respectful and works with integrity
  • Intellectually curious about current affairs and interested in the latest developments in politics, business and global trends
  • Comfortable with change and eager to problem-solve with your team, focusing on solutions
  • Able to build client relationships and balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
