We are currently looking for a Data Scientist to join our Scientific Data & Insight Function within the Safety & Surveillance group. This is a full-time opportunity, on a 2 year fixed term contract/loan/secondment/internal move or temporary promotion basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

We are implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.

What’s the role?

Join MHRA’s cutting-edge Scientific Data & Insight team as a Data Scientist and help shape global evidence on the safety of contraceptives. You’ll work with large-scale UK health datasets and apply advanced analytics and machine learning to answer high-impact public health questions. This is a rare opportunity to blend data science, epidemiology, and innovation to generate real-world evidence that informs global health decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse large-scale health datasets using R, applying statistical and machine learning methods to generate high-quality evidence
  • Communicate findings effectively through clear explanations, visualisations, and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Develop robust, reproducible, and scalable analytical workflows following best practices in coding, documentation, and version control
  • Apply epidemiological and data science methods to assess the safety of medicines

Who are we looking for?

Our Successful Candidate Will Have

  • Proven experience analysing large, complex health datasets using R
  • Strong applied statistical and/or machine learning skills, with the ability to select and implement appropriate methods for health data and interpret results accurately
  • Excellent data wrangling and pipeline-building skills, ensuring outputs are reproducible, well-documented, and scalable
  • Clear and confident communicator, able to present technical methods and results to both expert and non-expert audiences, including through data visualisation
  • Collaborative and adaptable approach, with experience working in multidisciplinary teams
