The Role

An exciting opportunity has become available to lead the Vascular Ultrasound Department within University Hospital Hairmyres. The post holder will join an experienced, enthusiastic and supportive vascular surgical department including vascular consultants, radiologists, registrars, vascular nurse specialists, vascular scientists and support staff. The primary purpose of the role is to manage and provide a diagnostic vascular ultrasound service within NHS Lanarkshire and the post holder should expect to spend at least 70% of their time scanning patients. The post holder should be a practising clinical vascular scientist with at least 3 years post qualification clinical experience and should also have experience working with and participating in multidisciplinary team meetings. They will at a minimum be fully competent in the following diagnostic scans: Carotid and vertebral arteries, Peripheral upper and lower limb arterial duplex, Peripheral upper and lower limb venous duplex, Graft surveillance, AAA and EVAR surveillance, Fistula pre and post assessment, Treadmill testing and ABPI/TBPI’s.
Vascular services in NHS Lanarkshire are part of the South West Scotland Vascular Network (SWSVN) centralised at University Hospital Hairmyres (UHH) covering the populations of NHS Lanarkshire, NHS Ayrshire and Arran and NHS Dumfries and Galloway. The vascular laboratory in UHH is responsible for the vascular ultrasound outpatient service for all of NHS Lanarkshire and the inpatient population of the whole South West Scotland Vascular Network.

The department is currently staffed by a lead vascular scientist (this post), an additional Band 7 vascular scientist, an STP vascular scientist trainee (in conjunction with GGC NHS Trust), 2 experienced vascular clinical support workers and a receptionist/secretary.

What we'll need you to bring
  • The post holder should be fully qualified as a Clinical Vascular Scientist with at least 3yrs post qualification experience in Vascular Ultrasound.
  • Educated to, or working at Master Level with a Degree in a relevant subject.
  • Should be actively practising as a Clinical Vascular Scientist as their primary skill and have gained significant clinical experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Must be fully competent in the following investigations;

Carotid and vertebral arteries

Peripheral upper and lower limb (including aortoiliac) arterial duplex.

Peripheral upper and lower limb venous duplex

Graft surveillance

Aortic aneurysm surveillance

Fistula assessment

Treadmill testing and ankle-brachial and toe pressure indices.

This role will be based at UHH East Kilbride in a purpose built ground floor vascular lab comprising of two spacious scanning rooms, a third consulting/clinic room, reception/waiting area, and manager’s office. East Kilbride is easily commutable from Glasgow and surrounds and staff enjoy free onsite parking and close public transport links to the hospital.
