Role Description

We are an agile team of data scientists, data engineers, data analysts and business specialists, delivering analytics, insight and data products to our market leading claims function. We're one of the largest general insurers in the UK, which means we have lots of IT and data legacy to work with, but we are on a transformation journey and have an incredible opportunity to create value, using the array of big data, analytics and data science tools available to us, our vast pool of data and deep industry expertise. Our claims function spends more than £1Bn each year, helping our customers when they need us most. In our team, we use data to improve the customer journey, uncover trends and opportunities, combat fraud and to optimise operations.

This is a Hybrid role - multi site working is available, specific location for this role can be discussed at interview.

Salary Information

Pay: Circa £56,000 per year. Pay is based on relevant experience, skills for the role, and location. Salary is only one part of our total reward package.

About You

  • Conceiving, developing, deploying and monitoring end-to-end, data-driven solutions to support Company initiatives, working individually or as part of a small cross-functional team.
  • Developing and working on the integration of end-to-end software solutions, including machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms, or custom algorithm development.
  • Identifying opportunities for innovation through analytics in the Organisation. Evaluating potential, scoping projects, and defining deliverables.
  • Measuring and tracking impact of the products developed through business KPIs. Presenting result of analyses to business owners and sharing knowledge with team members.
  • Supporting the simplification of processes so that business owners, in addition to data scientists, can leverage our data to drive business outcomes.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in a numerate, scientific or computing subject (e.g. Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Business Analytics)
  • Practical Data Science experience working within insurance or financial organisations
  • Proficiency in Python with knowledge of its data analysis libraries (pandas, NumPy)
  • Experience implementing Machine Learning algorithms such as Scikit-learn, XGBoost or LightGBM
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business problems into data-driven solutions
  • Experience with data visualisation tools and libraries (MicroStrategy, Power BI, Seaborn, Matplotlib, Plotly)
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex analyses clearly to diverse audiences across departments and seniority levels
  • Team player with a self-starter attitude and proven strong work ethic.

Desirable Skills

  • Database concepts and tools: SQL, NoSQL, Data Modelling. Big Data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, PySpark, Hive, Kafka)
  • Cloud platforms experience (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Knowledge of Agile work methodologies and tools (Jira, Confluence)
  • Understanding of MLOps practices and deployment pipelines
  • Version control using Git
  • Additional programming languages not necessary but helpful (R, Java, Scala)
  • Experience with insurance-specific applications such as pricing, claims, fraud detection or underwriting models
