This role sits in the Technology Office and plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of data exploitation across GSS. The successful candidate will drive the development and deployment of advanced data science and machine learning capabilities, helping to unlock new efficiencies, enable innovative business growth, and establish GSS as a centre of excellence in secure AI applications.

Operating in complex and high-assurance environments, the role demands a strategic mindset and hands-on expertise. The role holder will collaborate with stakeholders across the business to identify impactful opportunities and develop robust solutions.

This job role can be based in Manchester, Ipswich, Cheltenham. Onsite (Office based 5 days per week). Monday-Friday 37.5 hours per week. You will need to be eligible to obtain DV Security Clearance before starting this role. You will need to have lived in the UK for 10+ years to be eligible.

What you'll be doing

  • Leads the extraction and analysis of big data through the application of Data Science & AI techniques to generate insight from data to support decision-making across the business or to embed in new products and services.
  • Mentors other Data Science & AI professionals, helping to improve the team's abilities by acting as a technical resource.
  • Monitors the latest technology and market trends related to data science and machine learning operations and artificial intelligence, sharing this knowledge with the team.
  • Operates as an SME within own field of expertise, defining the technology infrastructure which enables optimal building and deployment of data science and machine learning algorithms.
  • Works to identify and prioritise high-impact internal/external opportunities aligned with business goals.

What we'd like to see on your CV
  • Artificial Intelligence: Experience deploying deep learning and vldl models including frontier LLMs.
  • Software Development: Highly experienced with compiled and interpreted languages such as Python and Scala/Java, confident with common in libraries like Pandas, NumPy.
  • MLOps: Skilled in designing and implementing scalable machine learning operations, including model deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management. Familiar with CI/CD practices, containerization, and cloud-native ML workflows to ensure robust and reproducible solutions.
  • Data Exploration: Proficient in uncovering insights through structured and unstructured data analysis. Able to identify patterns, anomalies, and trends using statistical techniques and visualization tools, supporting hypothesis generation and business decision-making.
  • Big Data Platforms: Experienced in working with distributed data processing technologies such as Hadoop, Spark, and cloud-based data lakes. Capable of architecting and optimizing data pipelines for high-volume, high-velocity data environments to enable scalable analytics.
